The Tobelo of Eastern Halmahera in the context of the field of anthropological study
unity in diversity : indonesia as a field of anthropological study • Dordrecht, Holland • Published In 1984 • Pages: 167-189
By: Platenkamp, Jos. D. M..
Abstract
This work shows that Tobelo social organization lacked clearly-defined unilineal kinship groups, living instead in village communities consisting of a group of co-resident cognatic relatives. Members of each residential cognatic unit jointly owned and cultivated a garden. Similarly, the village community as a whole organized communal worship and participated in other ceremonies, including marriage and funerary rituals. The author notes the implications for anthropological theories of kinship and regional comparisons of eastern Indonesian cultures.
