The Eastern Toraja are Bare'e speakers. The name Toraja is derived from a word meaning "people of the mountains" and applies to the people of the high mountain ranges and interior valleys of central Celebes (Sulawesi) in Indonesia. The Eastern Toraja, primarily dry rice cultivators, are located primarily around Lake Poso and the valleys of the Poso, Laa, and Kalaena rivers.
