expand_more Description
The Malayo-Polynesian speaking peoples of Flores Island, Indonesia practice swidden and dry-field horticulture, supplemented by hunting and fishing. Socially, the Florenese are organized into localized, landowning descent groups that are patrilineal or ambilineal and, in one case, matrilineal. In some areas, and up until the early national period in some cases, rajas ruled small principalities with ranked statuses of nobles, commoners, and slaves. Elements of an animistic religion have survived among converts to Islam and Catholicism.
