Abstract
This article discusses aspects of traditional etiquette, statecraft, and mysticism in Javanese culture and society. In doing so, the article argues for a unitary approach which locates the legitimacy of traditional Javanese elites (Priyayi) in culturally constructed concepts of ethics, aesthetics, and power.
