Abstract
This article, written by a native speaker of Javanese, is a description of the Javanese system of speech levels and their usage. The author indicates the distinguishing features of vocabulary and grammar which define the various speech levels, details the factors which determine the choice of speech level in verbal interaction, and gives examples of situations in which each would be appropriately used. There is some discussion of the relation of the speech levels to social and geographical dialects of Javanese, and the effects of social change and bilingualism on the system of speech levels in Java is also examined.
