Abstract
This dissertation questions '…what are the underlying cultural factors that permit Asian women to occupy high political offices in their societies?' (p. i). To answer this question Komanyi conducted a field study among the Ibans. The work identifies those specific norms that indicate the ideal vs. the real degree to which women participate in decision-making in Iban society. Komanyi describes Iban ethnology dealing with geography, history, language, house types, kinship and social organization, agriculture, religion, and life-cycle events. These data occupy a major portion of this study (chapters i-iv), with the actual evaluation of the findings appearing only in chapter v.
