Abstract
This is an ethnographic account of '…Iban behavior, the religious beliefs which are the basis for their way of life, the framework within which these exist, and the ends to which they are directed' (p. 5). Jensen notes that there has not been any systematic study of Iban religion and its significance for an understanding of social organization and systems of agriculture. The inter-relationship between these elements, however, is expressed by the Iban themselves through their concept of ADAT. This word, generally defined as 'customary law,' means more than that to the Iban. To the Iban, ADAT involves the basic values of life, including their system of agriculture, the code to which their society is ordered, as well as the 'correct' manner of behavior. Additional data in this work pertain to myths, beliefs in spirits, world view, seasonal rice cycles, and major agricultural rituals.
