Abstract
Only the first volume of this work is included here. Volume 1 deals with Iban social organization, in particular with the Iban Bilek-family and the long house community. In addition to the physical type and location of the Iban community house structures, Freeman deals with recruitment to the house through birth, marriage, and adoption, the incorporation of new families into the community, the structure of authority and the pressures of social control which the community can wield over its members. The ritual unity of the long house is shown to be the principal bond among the members. Brief descriptions of the long house as a corporate entity, in political, economic and ritual activities, are also given.
