Abstract
Gomes was an English missionary who spent many years in Sarawak during the period 1890-1910. This book is a general account of Dyak life and customs, interspersed with Gomes' reminiscences. The book contains chapters on Dyak character, manner of life, social life, life cycle, war and head-hunting, religion, sports, music, folk-lore, and the future of the Sea Dyak (from the point of view of missionary activities). Throughout, Gomes has not hesitated to make use of other published materials on the Dyak. In particular he has used 2: Howell, 4: Roth and 5: Roth, of this file, mainly for descriptions of pregnancy, warfare, head-hunting, infanticide, and cemeteries. These sections have not been indexed in this book. In addition, he makes acknowledged use of the entire article on the contents of a Dyak medicine chest by Bishop Hose. This book is well written and contains much useful information in addition to the above.
