Abstract
This source is divided into five parts as follows: Part I (pp. 1-167), Rice Culture and Rice Ritual; Part II (pp. 169-325), Marriage and Marriage Ritual; Part III (pp. 327-493), Death and Death Ritual; Part IV (pp. 495-711), Property and Property Ritual; Part V (pp. 713-754) Go-Betweens and Priests. The work is a description of Mayawyaw religion, including native texts of prayers, invocations, magical tales, ritual songs, and other ritual forumlae. Contextual data of general ethnographic interest if furnished in all five sections: a description of rice culture; information on the family and kinship; materials on death, death concepts, illness, headhunting and warfare, and social control; a treatment of the property system, legal system, land tenure system, and a description of exchange transactions and property disputes. Many case histories are given and much illustrative material is provided.
