Abstract
In this source Barton examines the 'sources of Ifugao law and its present status of development,' after which he sets forth the law itself. His codification is divided into three major sections, entitled, respectively, 'The Family Law, ' 'The Property Law,' and 'Penal Law.' He distinguishes two sources of law -- 'taboo (which is essentially religious) and custom.' The criminal law consists largely of taboos, whereas the customary law, which 'is the more important from the greater frequency of its application … embraces that which pertains to property, inheritance, water rights, and to a great extent, family law and procedure.' This monograph is based on Barton's earlier field work among the Ifugao.
