Abstract
This work by a Sama-Bajau describes subsistence activities, social organization, child rearing, ceremonies, and spiritual beliefs. It provides broad explanations for how the Sama-Bajau remained largely detached from the Philippine nation and the modern world at large. One is the perception that public schools are tools for converting their children into Catholics, making many Sama-Bajau families reluctant send children to school, not to mention the need for their labor in fishing and a frequent lack of cash for school supplies. A second reason was the insurgency war waged by Muslim fundamentalists against the national government that halted development programs to increase tourism and to promote seaweed farming and commercial fishing. As a solution, the author calls for a more robust program of public education that addresses the specific needs of Sama-Bajau youth, and provides vocational training and civics lessons for adults.
