Abstract
Oaxacan pottery has been noted for many years for its color, workmanship and design. This paper attempts to describe in detail the preparation of this type of pottery from the initial gathering of the clay to its firing in the kilns and eventual sale in the markets of Oaxaca City. To illustrate more graphically the processes taking place, the authors descibe the preparation of the pottery by the master potters Juventino and Rosa Nieto. As preliminary background to the study the Van de Velde's provide a very brief sketch of Zapotec culture history, including their relationships to the Spanish, Mixtecs and Toltecs; village size and location; and population.
