By: White, Leslie A..
Abstract
Leslie White made several field trips to the New Mexican pueblo of Zia, an extended stay in 1928-1929, and return visits of not more than a month or two in 1934, 1938, 1946, 1952, 1954, 1955, and 1957. He relied heavily on informants and focused on secret societies. He discusses the societies' leadership, recruitment, ceremonies, dances, masks, costumes, and curing practices. The latter involved the use of sand painting, specially constructed altars, fetishes, and prayer bundles. He does touch a little on Zia cosmology and religious beliefs.
