AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Based almost exclusively on Mormon archival material, this study examines the processes of settlement in a "Mormon Core Area" between 1847 and 1890. The author describes the historical and physical setting of the core area, the initial pattern and subsequent development of the settlement, and describes three selected communities. The principal topics covered are the reasons for choice of a settlement area, population characteristics and changes, and the size and acquisition of land holdings. Additionally, previous literature on theoretical geography and Mormon studies is reviewed and critiqued.
