By drawing on letters, diaries, and journals of the period in describing such basic dimensions of life as place, shelter, food, and family, the author provides a picture of the Mormon lifestyle from 1830 to the turn of the century. Topics covered include the geographical framework and frequency of movement, dwellings, diet, family life and household structure, courtship and marriage, sickness and death and ideas about medicine, curing and doctors, work and play, religious worldview and beliefs about the imminence of the Second Coming, and church services.
