Abstract
This paper describes in extensive detail the western Apache girl's puberty rite (NA IH ES) as performed by Apaches living on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The puberty rite is interwoven with an enactment of the Changing Woman myth. Also included is an analysis of the symbolic content of the puberty ceremonial and its functional relationship to Apache society.
