Abstract
This chapter, written by an ethnomusicologist and a Navajo, deals with both traditional and nontraditional Navajo music, including instruments. Traditional music is divided into ceremonial, nonceremonial, and sacred songs. Where appropriate, these songs are addressed in terms of their place in ritual activity. New Anglo music forms and their syncretism with native forms are the second focus of the chapter.
