By: Wyman, Leland Clifton.
Abstract
This article presents an overview of the Navajo ceremonial system, particularly as it relates to curing practices. Data for the article were gathered by a prominent researcher over four decades prior to the writing of the manuscript in 1972. An explicit classification of chantway ceremonies versus Holyway, Evilway, and Lifeway rituals is particularly useful in providing analytical distinctions. Aside from detailing ceremonial dynamics, the author identifies associated etiological factors and describes ceremonial equipment. Considerable attention is given to the role and production of sandpaintings.
