Origins of the longhouse religion

Handbook of North American Indians. Northeast15Published In 1978 • Pages: 442-448 [dc]

By: Wallace, Anthony F. C..

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a study of the origins of the Longhouse Religion, developed on the basis of revelations by the Iroquois prophet Handsome Lake in 1799. Wallace discusses some of the contributing factors that led to the acceptance of this new religion, such as the break-down of the equilibrium of the cultural system as the result of a series of military, political, and economic disasters that befell the Iroquois during the period of 1763-1797, and the subsequent loss of native lands combined with the establishment of reservations from 1797-1799. The document concludes with an analysis of the religion of Handsome Lake, and a brief biographical sketch of the prophet's life.
