Conclusion: what good are the Amish?

Abstract
How should we view the Amish? Are they an irrelevant relic - a pre-Enlightenment society that stifles individual freedom and expression? Or have the Amish devised a morally superior way of life worthy of emulation? In this essay, Marc A Olshan suggests that neither view is helpful in thinking about the Amish contribution to our collective struggle with modernity. The Amish, suggests Olshan, are a light to the modern world to the extent that they teach us to have the courage to set limits on human behavior (p. 231).
