Abstract
Amish society is organized around preindustrial gender roles that for the most part have remained sheltered from the winds of feminism. At first glance Amish women appear to live under the domination of a male patriarchy legitimated by traditional religious teaching. Yet Amish women exhibit an unexpected self-confidence and strength. In this study Marc A. Olshand and Kimberly D. Schmidt explore this intriguing feminist conundrum and suggest that an understanding of gender roles in Amish society requires an understanding of their world view (p. 215).
