Abstract
Many observers have argued that the survival of Amish society rests on an agrarian way of life. Unlike their Lancaster cousins, many of the Amish in the Elhart-Lagrange settlement of Indiana have left their cows and have taken up factory employment. This settllement offers an intersting case study in which to explore the linkage between Amish culture and an agricultural way of life. Thomas Meyers assesses the impact of factory work and concludes that although employment away from home will bring changes it will not lead to the demise of Amish society (p. 165).
