Ethnicity and the politics of symbolism in Miami's Cuban community

Abstract
This paper argues that the importance of symbolic politics in Miami's Cuban community is challenged by the transformation of Cuban exiles into Cuban ethnics who must balance the use of symbolic politics with the practical necessity of compromise imposed by American politics at the local and national levels. The mixture of symbolic and substantative politics show clearly the heightened tension between the residual legacies of the exile experience and the emergence of ethnic politics (p. 11).
