Haitian Americans originate from the Republic of Haiti. During the late eighteenth century many Haitians came to the United States and participated in the American Revolution. They continued to come throughout the nineteenth century and settled in New Orleans, Philadelphia, and New York City, where they contributed to the cultural and economic development of these cities. They have also formed cultural concentrations in Boston and South Florida as well as settling in locations throughout the Eastern seaboard of the US. Haitians often work in industries such as health care, hotels, office cleaning, and transport services. They are also active in US politics.
