By: Garrison, Vivian.
Abstract
Garrison studied Spanish-speaking psychiatric patients and clients at several CENTROS. This article is about one patient in particular, named Maria, and her ATAQUE and subsequent treatment. Garrison points out, 'the two types of healers [pyschiatrist and ESPIRITISTA] classify the same feelings and behaviors in similar ways as illnes or health and have similar treatment goals. To a lesser extent they have similar treatment techniques, but they view these within very different systems of conceptualization of the self and world,' (page 443).
