Status among the Montagnais-Naskapi of Labrador

Ethnohistory5 • Published In 1958 • Pages: 200-209

By: Leacock, Eleanor Burke.

Abstract
This document is a brief discussion of the lack of importance of ascribed status among the Montagnais-Naskapi. In the loose social structure, the few status distinctions that are made are based only upon demonstrated achievement, and cease to exist when the ability from which they result ends. Leacock includes information from Le Jeune, the French missionary who described the Montagnais in 1633-1634, and concludes that in 300 years changes in personality and social structure have not been great.
