Montagnais art in birch-bark, a circumpolar trait

Abstract
Concentrating on the Montagnais bands at Lake St. John and Escoumains with some material from the Mistassini, Speck describes the ornamentation of birch bark containers. His purpose, typical of anthropology of that time, was to trace the evolution and development of the art from distributional evidence. Although the results are somewhat dubious, Speck gives a good synposis of the controversy about the European origin of post-contact northeastern Indian art. The study gives a thorough description and analysis of the ornamentation of birchbark containers.
