Cross-cousin marriage and the culture of the northeastern Algonkian
American anthropologist, n.s. • 31 • Published In 1929 • Pages: 277-288
By: Strong, William Duncan.
Abstract
Strong describes the occurrence of cross-cousin marriage among the Barren Ground, White Whale River, and Ungava bands of the Naskapi, and also gives lists of the kinship terms used by the Barren Ground and Davis Inlet bands. He also includes a summary description of the culture of the latter two bands for help in understanding the context in which these instances of cross-cousin marriage occur. He believes that the more southerly bands of the Montagnais-Naskapi ceased their practice of cross-cousin marriage as a result of white, particularly missionary, contact. Strong is now Loubat Professor of American Archaeology at Columbia University.
