Abstract
This source presents a generalized account of Plains Ojibwa ethnography, with special emphasis on the following: culture history, physiography of the Turtle Mountains, relations with neighboring tribes, socio-cultural changes brought about in Ojibwa society through contact with Plains environment and other indigenous Plains cultures, use of natural resources, in particular the buffalo, land treaties and agreements, education, and Indian troubles resulting from famines and broken agreements with the US and local governments. In addition to the above, an appendix to this article provides supplementary information in the form of eye-witness accounts dealing with the trouble that developed in January, 1889, between the Chippewa and the local county government, the battle between the Mandans and Chippewa at Pembina in 1840, and a vivid account of a large scale buffalo hunt made in 1845, as observed by a missionary.
