Abstract
Parks and DeMallie clear up misconceptions regarding the interrelationships among the Sioux-Assiniboine-Stoney dialects based on a comprehensive survey of Sioux, Assiniboine, and Stoney speech in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota. They identify five major dialects: Santee-Sisseton, Yankton-Yanktonai, Teton, Assiniboine, and Stoney and conclude that Assiniboine is distinct from the three Sioux dialects including Yankton-Yanktonai dialect from which it supposedly derived. They also conclude that the Assiniboine and Stoney dialects are distinct from each other, in part due to the latter's heavy borrowing from Cree.
