Abstract
The author spent the summer of 1948 in Nikolski Village on Umnak in the Aleutians doing archaeological research with the Harvard Peabody Museum Aleutian Expedition. He became interested in the local Aleuts and spent much of his leisure time with them. In his social contacts, he collected the ethnological data presented here and, accordingly, the material, including that on the early Aleut, is based on observations of and reports of contemporary Aleuts. Throughout the text, the author refers to one or another of his informants. Complete descriptions of these informants are given on pp. 16-29. Hand drawings of weapons and game equipment and photographs of Nikolski Village and of many of the author's informants are included. The photographs are not included.
