Account of the Russian discoveries between Asia and America

Abstract
This is a compilation of reports of the voyages of Russian explorers and hunters from 1711 to 1792, based on primary sources, many of them unpublished manuscripts. It contains material on many of the tribes of Siberia and Northwest America, but only the material on the Aleut has been processed. There are many discrepancies between the different reports and, as indicated in other sources, some inaccuracies. This is probably due not only to inaccurate and prejudiced reporting by some of the hunters, but also in a few cases to faulty translation and the conscious effort by the Aleuts to conceal their customs, particularly their religious customs, from the Russians. The period of Aleut culture covered is from the discovery of the Aleutian Islands by Bering in 1741 to the Billings expedition in 1790. The account of Bering's expedition is from Steller's journal and that of the Billings expedition from Sauer's journal. Since both of these sources are included in this collection (See 6: Golder and 16: Sauer), Coxe's translations have not been included. In addition, an account of the merchant Tolstykh's voyage is included in 2: Jochelson and therefore was not included in Coxe. In the period covered by Coxe, Aleut culture was changing as a result of contact with the Russians. An attempt was made to identify each passage as to date and locality.
