Abstract
This paper consists of two separate biographical sketches derived from the study of two Serbian families. One biography deals with a seventy-six year old Serbian peasant visiting his grandchildren in California, while the other describes a depressed octogenerian passing his last years in a home for the aged in a provencial Yugoslav town (p. 79). According to the author these case histories suggest the possible range of experience in aging within a single cultural matrix, showing in effect how individuals attempt to resolve, with varying degrees of success, the opposition inherent in society and culture through their everyday choices (p. 80).
