Abstract
This article, which serves as an introduction to the book NEW WORLD HASIDIM: ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF HASIDIC JEWS IN AMERICA, presents a brief, general survey of the Hasidim, including data on the Hasidic way of life, their cultural history, their establishment as a religious sect in North America, and a review and critique of some of the ethnographic writings on these people. Given particular attention are the papers by Shaffir, Koskoff, Davidson, Kaufman, Morris, Kranzler, Belcove-Shalin, Epstein, and Poll which comprise documents 20-28 in this file.
