AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
From the 1950s to 1990 researchers have tended to characterize the behavior of Italian Americans (and other ethnics in the United States) as being principally the outcome of enduring norms, values, and attitudes brought to the United States from the ethnic country of origin. This explanation is known as the cultural trait approach. This paper critiques this approach "…by reviewing and discussing some of the research on the educational and occupational achievements of Italian Americans. It examines the cultural traits of the family and the social and economic situation in explaining the group's achievements" (p. 227).
