AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This study analyzes women's behavior patterns in traditional Italian society, especially in regard to the family, and attempts to show how these patterns were integrated into women's role in the American labor force during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Much of the document discusses the importance of women in the garment industry in New York City during this period and the appalling working conditions at that time. These conditions eventually led to the unionization of women, and their active participation in labor strikes against that industry.
