This is a brief study of Hmong clans and clan leadership both as they existed in traditional society in Laos and as they exist in the Hmong community in Providence, Rhode Island. The author discusses some of the present functions of the clan in Providence, particularly in reference to giving advice, settling disputes in the community, and mutual assistance in times of need (e.g., providing cash loans).
