Abstract
This article describes the history and emergence of CONJUNTO music -- a highly popular style of Texas-Mexican music -- from its embryonic appearance in 1935 to its full-blown stylization in the mid 1950s. Brief biographical sketches of some of the leading musicians in the development of this style of music are presented, as well as the various instruments they used in the composition of the music. The second part of this study deals with Peña's ethnomusicological interpretation of CONJUNTO, and to a lesser degree that of ORQESTA TEXENE, another popular music style. Chicano middle and lower class differences are noted in the acceptance of these two types of music, based in large part on cultural ideologies and values.
