By: Flores, Richard R..
Abstract
In this book, Richard Flores describes one San Antonio troupe's annual production of Los Pastores, a nativity play performed entirely in Spanish, that descends from medieval Spain, and was brought to the New World by Spanish missionaries. The author, who actually participated in the play himself, discusses the significance of the play to both performers and audience, and traces its evolution from liturgical drama to Spanish Glden Age literature to indigenous Mexican tradition (cover). Part I of this document deals with the actual performance of the drama, while part II deals with its history and with more theoretical constructs (e.g., a production-centered theory of expressive culture).
