Abstract
In an attempt to correct to some degree a gap in the current knowledge of Chicano culture, the authors of this collection have presented here a series of thirteen papers dealing essentially with immigration and the immigrant's experience in the United States, ethnicity and culture change, and voluntary associations and leadership. The purpose of presenting this collection of papers is fourfold: (1) to add to the knowledge of Chicano communities and cultures in general with specific emphasis on the heterogeneity and within these communities; (2) to add to the knowledge and understanding of how Mexican-Americans have adapted in various urban areas; (3) to add descriptive information and analysis on various urban communities in the Midwest, for which there is little ethnographic information; and (4) to bring an anthropological approach to the understanding of Chicano culture.
