Abstract
From the notebooks of Yoro Dyâo, Rousseau has drawn material that is concerned primarily with political organization and traditional history. After explaining how Cayor became independent of the Wolof Empire in 1549, Dyâo retraces the life of each DAMEL (king), being careful to place him genealogically and chronologically. To understand the succession of DAMELs he points out the importance of the MENE (matrilineal family). Rousseau has compiled numerous genealogical charts based on Dyâo's account and these are presented along with a synopsis of important historical events, a map and bibliography.
