Abstract
This study is based on the writings of Yoro Dyâo, a chief in Oualo under the French colonial administration. Rousseau presents the life of Yoro Dyâo, his literary style, sources and publications, then the alterations, omissions and changes he has made in Yoro Dyâo's text. The rest of the source is made up of this text along with Rousseau's running commentary and notes. The fact that Yoro Dyâo represents and writes from the viewpoint of the upper class gives much insight into the social structure at the time. The study dates from the mid 18th century, and much detailed information is given to the internal and external political relationships (Trarza MS24) and the class system. In the latter, data on the BADOLO (commoners) is significantly lacking while nobility, captive and griot categories are discussed at great length.
