Abstract
This is a study of traditional associations of a cooperative nature among the Hausa, intended to serve as an example of analysis of native society for the purpose of planning cooperative economic development under a program of applied anthropology. Smith describes cooperative associations formed for various purposes and their relationship to kinship, household, occupations, education, and economic organization. A considerable portion of the article is given to a discussion of theory and possible future developments of cooperative organization in the Hausa area.
