Abstract
This autobiography of a community leader highlights the ways he influenced the pace of socioeconomic changes in a government-planned village for resettling Nubian farmers whose fields and orchards were lost under the rising waters of the Aswan Dam after it was raised in 1933. This individual played a critical role in infrastructure development by mobilizing villagers in effective collective actions for receiving promised compensation, public funds, and state support. There is commentary on the personal characteristics and skills that brought him to the fore as an agent of change and a social entrepreneur.
