Abstract
This is a study of youth organizations in traditional Fur society. It begins by noting that the Fur lacked age grades of the kinds found in many parts of Eastern Africa and beyond. Yet, the Fur recognized the centrality of age for understanding the changing roles and responsibilities expected of individuals and groups. Children enjoyed a great deal of freedom to play a variety of games. Adolescents assumed increasingly important roles, including policing their village communities and helping their respective households with agricultural labor, especially in peak seasons, through informal mechanisms for labor exchange and cooperation.
