AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This German-language work covers aspects of Bilen customary law governing marriage and family relations, labor contracts, property ownership and inheritance, and compensation for murder and injury. A brief political history of the Bilen since their arrival in the region is provided. The author’s central argument is that the objectives and severity of their legal code are attributable to the location of the Bilen within a frontier territory, under only minimal control of the Ethiopian state and encircled by not yet incorporated nomadic herding communities.
