The revolutionary movement of 1977-1979
Iran : from religious dispute to revolution • Cambridge, Mass. • Published In 1980 • Pages: 181-231
By: Fischer, Michael M. J..
Abstract
This is a blow by blow account of the Iranian Revolution. Fischer describes the revolution as a 'successful passion play' directed by Shi'ite clergy who preached against the injustice of the Pahlavi regime using the Karbala paradigm as a rallying point for all Iranians. The revolution was also a call to return to the original purity of the true Islam. While Fischer's interest is in the discourse, he doesn't shy away from the bloodshed, reporting on the numerous demonstrations and violent clashes that occured in this period.
