Abstract
This paper analyzes the transformation of health care in Iran since the mid-nineteeth century. It criticizes the diffusionist model commonly employed for the analysis of medical change and briefly outlines an alternative approach. It analyzes the relationship between changes in Iranian health care and political and socioeconomic transformations, presenting data from research in a provincial town (Maragheh). And it describes inequalities and contradictions in Iranian health care that resulted from the structure of the evolving medical system (p. 59).
