By: Young, T. Cuyler (Theodore Cuyler).
Abstract
This article briefly traces the history of western influence in Iran from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through the Allied occupation during World War II. Emphasis is placed primarily on the development of nationalism, the westernization and secularization programs of Reza Shah and the spiritual chaos which followed the collapse of the Pahlevi regime. Mr. Young was in Iran with the American Presbyterian Mission from 1928-36 and again in 1945-46 as the first Public Affairs Officer of the American Embassy.
